CHAPTER THIRTEEN

My sister stood, smiled pleasantly. “I’m closing the shop in a few minutes. I’ll be over in half an hour.”

And just like that, the spell was broken.

“Be over?” I repeated, my mind still catching up to the change in conversation.

“Yes. Remember, we’re all coming over for lunch.”

I’d forgotten. And I was having dinner with Ren tonight.

Nora grinned. “Don’t keep her too long. Zoey has dinner plans with Renfield Baker tonight.”

Cora’s mouth fell open. “The artist?”

“That’s the one.”

“But how?”

“I’ll tell you at lunch,” I said, then forced Nora and Kate out the door.

The moment we were on the sidewalk, Nora started talking.

“I told you.”

Kate said, “She thinks Jonah sold his sold to the devil.”

“You have to admit, the stories she told us sound a lot like Jonah’s.”

I held up my hands to stop them. “I just can’t believe Jonah would do that. He was a cheater and a jerk, but selling his soul, going to secret devil worship dinner parties? I mean seriously, worshiping the devil? The only person Jonah worshiped was himself. Besides, when would he have had the time?”

“All those business trips,” Nora said. “He was gone at least two weeks out of every month. Do you know for sure he went where he told you he was going?”

“Where else would he go?”

“How long was he seeing Tina before you found out about her?”

“Okay. Point taken. I didn’t know everything. Clearly. That doesn’t mean he was into devil worship.”

Except I’d been at the house today and saw that clearly he was into something dark.

“It doesn’t mean he wasn’t,” Nora said.

“I can’t believe I’m about to say this,” Kate said, “but his death was odd. Like you said, it’s strange that nobody heard him die. Somebody should have heard something.”

“So you’re saying you think he sold his soul to the devil?” I asked.

“I’m saying the way he died is strange and unexplainable.”

A white Malibu pulled up to the sidewalk. A moment later, my niece and nephews spilled out of the car. Alphonse, the oldest, was driving. Tione, my moody, fifteen year old nephew, was riding shotgun, while the youngest two, Asia and Jordan, had been in the backseat.

“And I told him he better not hit my brother,” Asia was explaining to the group at large.

She was the youngest, but arguable the toughest of the lot. Her long, jetty hair, large brown eyes and sweet little face were completely misleading.

“You guys go on. I’ll talk to you later,” I told Nora and Kate, who head off in the direction of their shop.

“Zoey,” Jordan yelled, starting toward me. He wasn’t quite ten yet, so he was still incredibly sweet with a high-pitched voice.

Asia trailed him.

Alphonse and Tione waved and walked into their mom’s shop.

“Where are you going?” Jordan wanted to know. “And can we go with you?”

“Yes, yes, yes!” Asia exclaimed, jumping up and down.

“I’m going to Tansy to pick up a few things for dinner.”

“We want to go, too,” Jordan reiterated.

“You can come with me, but you have to tell your mom.
